Mendon Town Board 2026-05-11

The evening of 2026-05-11 was a meeting of the Mendon Town Board.

Again, was a surprisingly large crowd. And while a few did comment, I don’t think that explained everyone. Which was how the last regular meeting was too. Are we looking at a trend here?

The owner of 3808 Rush Mendon Rd, as well as a few neighbors, commented. Seems to be contention about what is being done, and whether it is appropriate.

There was also a girl scout there to thank the Town for the usage of the old Library building. They have been using it for the past few years, and gave an overview of their activities and such. For those interested, they will be having an open house May 26 from 6-7PM at 15 Monroe Street. The old library, for those of you who have been here a while.

The burn ban is ending in a few days. Once that happens, you can fill out a Burn Permit. It was suggested that, if you do so, you report it properly. Otherwise, you might be surprised when the fire department shows up to put it out.

There was a presentation from the Chair of the Climate Smart Task Force. As I tend to have concerns with ‘climate’ anything, it was nice to hear it reiterated this is a research group. They would not be taking any action. Instead reporting back to the Town board, who might take action.

Joe (Supervisor) reported a payroll hiccup, but it has been addressed. While unfortunate, especially if it was your paycheck, these things happen. As ever, the more important questions are around how quickly and thoroughly it was addressed.

The Mendon Youth Center is closing for the season soon. After May 21st, kids will have to play outside. Or at least not in the Mendon Youth Center.

Purchasing of a truck was tabled. By the sounds of it, there was a timing slip up. While the money was allocated last year, the truck wasn’t ready then. Ideally, the money should have been transferred back when the purchase didn’t happen. But it wasn’t. So, while the money is in the bank, it isn’t in the budget line. In the interests of making sure everything is where it should be, tabled for next month. Which seems prudent.

Following up on the health insurance presentation from a few weeks back, the Board attempted to act. Alas, one of the members was away for business. And another member is also a retired Town employ. Thus benefiting from the retiree health insurance, and as such had to abstain from voting. Combined with one ‘no’ vote, the motion failed. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not a large financial impact. But it was amusing watching the details play out such that no action was taken.

And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the May 11, 2026 meeting of the Mendon Town Board.
