Honeoye Falls Planning Board 2017-11-06

Tonight (2017-11-06) was a meeting of the Honeoye Falls Planning Board.

The meeting was a bit slow to get started. It turns out there were some last minute changes and additional information that needed to be dealt with. One application withdrew (NOTMI/Mathstone storage units), and another changed some details (12 N Main).

During the wait for the meeting to start, there was discussion on the differences between men and women. In particular, how all of human culture is a side effect of man’s search for a mate. An amusing idea, regardless of it’s accuracy. Despite what legal counsel may say, it’s the discussions that occur outside of the board’s formal meeting that are the most entertaining.

The former Oppedisano’s Bootery has a new owner. They received approval for some relatively minor external renovation. It sounds like there was an unapproved apartment in the building, but that is vacant and will remain so until it is properly approved. The new owner is uncertain what his plans are for that portion of the building, so is deferring any action there until he works that out. He does has a prospective tenant for the front portion of the building, sounds like a surveying firm.

Mathstone was requesting demolition and rebuilding of an odd piece of land. If I understand it right, while the address is listed as 14 Norton Street, it visually looks like a barn off of West Main. The particular piece of land has been attached to various other pieces over the years, and currently appears to be the primary part of a flag lot. Complicating matters, the barn is on a historical registry. This is causing the board to postpone any action until they can get a response from legal counsel. Seems reasonable, but Mathstone was not thrilled about that. While he may have been exaggerating, it sounds like he may leave the building to gradually rot if the red tape is too thick. Which would be a shame, but I can’t blame him. The ‘let it rot’ approach did work for the former main street laundromat.

Last application of the night was a simple deck. Of note only because it was a board member making the request. I believe this is the first time I have seen a board member make a request of their board. A few times I’ve seen a board member make a request of other boards, but I don’t think I’ve seen one of their own board. The request itself was pretty straight forward. Asked for a small deck, got approval to build. Applicant obviously didn’t vote for his own project, but other then that nothing of note.

And finally, Muffy was back again, despite not formally being on the agenda. She was asking for clarification on what the next step will be from her special meeting last Thursday. Looks like that ‘next step’ will be public notification of a special meeting at some point. Having said that, despite being there, it wasn’t clear to me if that will be the case. Reminded me of the joke about ‘I know what all of the words you said mean, but I don’t know what you meant’.

And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the November 6, 2017 meeting of the Honeoye Falls Planning Board.
