Mendon Town Board 2025-04-14

The evening of 2025-04-14 was a meeting of the Mendon Town Board.

The reoccurring theme of the meeting was following the Procurement Policy. In particular, Kim (Board member) repeatedly brought it up, because it appears the Town has been a bit lax in following it’s own policies. Fair enough, if they have policies, they should follow them. They can always change them if they don’t like them. So I’ll give credit to her. Even if there are times when policies need to be set aside due to the details of the situation. But that should be a rare exception, for obvious and clear reasons.

The Mendon Youth Center will be closing on May 15th. Which, if you’ve been using it, you probably already knew.

Another recycling event is being scheduled for October 18th. I’m sure more details will be provided as the date approaches. But I get asked this enough times, I’m pointing it out. Put it on your calendar if you have electronics to dispose of. While the details change each time, the Town does hold similar events every few years.

And the Village Court is no more, now being handled by the Town Court. I’ve mentioned this before, but this was the Town acknowledging the change had happened.

Towards the end of the meeting was a discussion on temporary signs, and potentially changing the Town Code. No Code change tonight, but I would expect a Public Hearing for one before too long. As none was set tonight, won’t be May, but may be June.

Considering the discussion, I think they are making it too complicated. While I don’t like lawn signs anymore than the next guy, freedom for me means risking being offended by freedom for you. If my neighbor insists on putting rude and obnoxious signs up anyways? It will be self correcting. Maybe not as quickly as I would like. But maybe that means I need to learn to chill out a little bit. Or actually engage in a dialogue, where I learn why my neighbor wants the signs up. Otherwise, outlawing rude behavior/speech/thoughts/etc will inevitably outlaw ALL behavior/speech/thoughts/etc, except that which is formally approved by the regime.

As an aside, the Town’s website recently switched from townofmendon.org to townofmendonny.gov, due to a State mandate. And if I did my job correctly, the transition should have gone seamlessly.

And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the April 14, 2025 meeting of the Mendon Town Board.
