The evening of 2024-01-02 was a meeting of the Mendon Town Board.
Time again for the organizational meeting, which meant many items on the agenda. While most of them were quickly approved, a number had some discussion. More then I can recall at past organizational meetings, but it seemed the Board members wanted to comment, confirm, or otherwise converse. In the end, I think everything was approved. Either ‘as is’, or with minor adjustments. Such as fixing the typo of the year 2424.
There was also a Public Hearing for the renewal of a Short Term Rental at 3880 Rush Mendon Road. No real discussion, felt more like a formality than anything else. But it does provide the outlet for revoking approval, if the situation ever warrants it.
Mary Fletcher and Jim Merzke, former full-time staff, are back in various part-time roles. Good they can fill in when needed, and also have the benefit of their experience. And amusing how roles change.
On that note, Tom Voorhees is now on the Zoning Board. While not a return so much, he was previously the Code Enforcement Officer. Again, roles changing.
The upcoming eclipse was mentioned, as there is a regular meeting scheduled for that evening. As the meeting is long enough after the eclipse, the Board decided to stick to that schedule. Makes sense. If the eclipse ends at ~4:30PM, and the meeting starts at ~7PM, that should be plenty of time between the two.
While it was approved as presented, there were concerns raised about how the Town offers health insurance to employees. They are planning to review this over the year. It was also stated, that was the plan last year too. Although, from my point of view they did make progress on the discussion over the year.
Saturdays expected power outage was mentioned. Good to make sure everyone is aware. I can’t speak for anyone else, but my concern is water pipes freezing. Lack of power is inconvenient, but manageable. Freezing pipes is just a mess. While it’s still a few days out, the forecast looks to be warm enough during the planned outage time.
And it was also Kim Roberts first meeting on the Board. While a single meeting is hardly enough for a thorough evaluation, she seems to be settling into the role well.
And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the January 02, 2024 meeting of the Mendon Town Board.
