Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education 2023-02-07

The evening of 2023-02-07 was a meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education (BoE), and Program Budget Advisory Council (PBAC).

Full disclosure: I sit on the PBAC, so some of these Observations aren’t exactly from the Audience.

Due to the Board meeting in executive session before the meeting, when the public portion started they effectively jumped right into the Budget Study Session.

The first budget presentation was from the High School. One of the few things that stood out to me was the Teacher On Special Assignment (TOSA). It sounds like this is a one year project to focus on team collaboration.

Apart from that, I don’t have much to say here. The buzz quotient felt high and I just kind of bounced off much of it. Considering the comments and questions from other people, this was probably just me. Which indirectly highlights why there is a group. Any one of us can fail to connect, but someone else should fill in.

The second budget presentation was from Interscholastic Athletics (and Health, as Brian pointed out). I would have to rate this the best video so far. Also funniest. Brian managed to be both amusing and informative. Not that he did it alone, Henry from Riddell was a great assistant.

Participation in sports was interesting. Apparently the number of students has been dropping, even as the percentage has been inching up. Side effect of total enrollment being down, as the students still enjoy playing sports.

When the presentations finished, the PBAC and BoE separated for their discussions. When the PBAC had finished, the BoE had either left or was in executive session. Either way, the public portion of the meeting looked to have concluded. Next Budget Session should be at Middle on February 28.

As alluded to at the top, this meant I missed out on the Board’s regular business items. Of those listed in the agenda, I was expecting the Capital Project and Policy Recommendations to be interesting discussions. Hopefully all goes well with the recording and I’ll be able to watch it soon enough.

As an aside, and while it was not directly a portion of this meeting, I did receive followup from the District on my concerns on the 1/10 Settlement Agreement. Long story short, I jumped to conclusions when I should have asked for more information. More information was provided when asked, and while there are many details still being kept confidential (as they should be), I am satisfied with what was provided.

And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the February 07, 2023 meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education.

Agenda’s and similar information can be found at HFL’s BoardDocs page. While a recording will likely be available soon.
