Tonight (2020-12-08) was a meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education (BoE).
There were some technical hiccups at the start of the meeting. Sorting them out did delay things a bit, although they were eventually resolved. Until that happened, the group did muddle through as best they could. That enough people were in the room to conduct business mitigated things somewhat, although I do wonder what the viewing experience was like. Mostly of note as a contrast to last night’s meeting.
Looks like the previously discussed way for the Board to recognize those that have done great things has been found. Early in meetings there will be an opportunity for Board members to recognize whoever they feel like, and periodically there will be a more formal event (although it sounds like there are still details to iron out). Tonight Stephanie gave a nice speech about how amazing the staff has been in general.
Lima Primary reported that they had snow on the ground for a bit, and that the kids enjoyed playing in it. As it should be. Best to enjoy the weather, especially as we can’t change it.
Manor Intermediate received recognition as an ‘International Habits of Mind Learning Community of Excellence‘.
The High School produced an open house video which had the math department dressed for football. Mathletes, perhaps. Unfortunately, no link was provided and I have failed to find it. Still, the image in Gene’s (Superintendent) report is amusing.
Bids for Capitol Project 2.5 were approved. Total project cost is ~$9.7 million, although I’m sure much of that will be state aid-able (how much the state pays is another topic). Considering how there always seems to be a Capitol Project in the works, the numbering seems kind of pointless. Seems more practical to number them by year, ie Capitol Project 2020.
Urban-Suburban Annual Update was tonight as well. For the record, I have not been in favor the program since it’s start. Having said that, it sounds like it is working well enough, despite the various challenges. Although it does raise some interesting questions. If HFL can teach out of district students while they are off campus, can this be leveraged at scale? There appears to be an opportunity here, even if it seems to clash with the geographic background of public education.
There was also discussion about the governor’s direction on various topics. In particular, how what he says in speeches and what the written orders say tend to differ. Which illustrates why we are a republic. The executive branch (governor in this case) is to enforce the law, not create it. The legislative branch creates law, after appropriate deliberation. Two different functions, two different branches. When one branch assumes the roles of another, trouble is inevitable.
And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the December 08, 2020 meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education.
As has become the norm for this group, Agenda’s and similar information can be found at HFL’s BoardDocs page. While a recording of the meeting will likely be available soon.
