Tonight (2020-01-28) was a meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education (BoE), and before that the Program Budget Advisory Council (PBAC).
Full disclosure: I sit on the PBAC, so some of these Observations aren’t exactly from the Audience.
The first presentation was from the Lima crew. And there were a good sized number of them, which is pretty normal for this group. Gave a good report about the greatness they have done, and plans for future greatness. Feel free to read the presentation if that interests you. Or watch the video, which may be more entertaining (supposedly it will be shared on Facebook ‘soon’).
Might be a sign that I’ve been to too many of these, but very little of the presentation stood out to me. Not to say it was dull or anything, it was interesting enough. Just it’s not the first time I’ve been entertained by the antics of little kids. Or wanted to see more history of the numbers reported (ie how does this compare with the past decade). Or pondered how the percentage raises for staff compared with the public at large (ie non-governmental workers).
Although the words in the gym were interesting. There was a clear focus on vocabulary, so might as well use them everywhere. On the wall, floor, etc. Don’t know how much it does for the kids, as my memories of gym that long ago are foggy at best. Are they more focused on the chance to run and climb then the words? Or does it all soak into the sponges, even as they enjoy their exercise? Not questions I can answer.
After Lima’s presentation, the BoE gave their budget presentation. While I have seen the numbers in past years, this is the first time I can recall this as part of the PBAC process. Overall, tiny budget numbers, but I thought it was good they offered them.
I was also glad to hear the Board is considering cutting their memberships in MCSBA and/or NYSSBA. Not because I think they should, but because I’ve heard the question of ‘why are we part of these groups’ too many times. Regardless of if they stay members or leave, I think it’s commendable that the idea is even being explored. If nothing else they will know why.
With that the presentations were done and the PBAC went to the art room for our discussion. By the time we had finished, the Board had moved into executive session. Considering the agenda, how long the PBAC had been talking, who was still around (and who wasn’t), I suspect the meeting ended as soon as that did. Of course, it would not be the first time I was wrong…
And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the January 28, 2020 meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education.
As has become the norm for this group, Agenda’s and similar information can be found at HFL’s BoardDocs page.
