The evening of 2026-04-06 was a meeting of the Mendon Public Library Board of Trustees.
A fundraiser is being run, selling flowers for Mother’s day. Or, I suppose, any other use you may have for flowers around that time. I can’t find details online, but I did see a flier on the window. So if you are interested check it out when next in the library. I’m tempted to buy some myself. Mom does like her flowers. Or maybe she just likes being given things by her kids. Eh, it makes her smile, which is enough.
A donation (grant?) was made to help cover the Summer Reading Program. If I have my details right, the Hallowell Fund makes these donations regularly enough. Either way, good to have the support to encourage reading in the summer.
And because everyone loves policies, the State library has mandating a few more that the local libraries must have. Disaster preparedness was the one talked about the most. Which is prudent enough. But the library isn’t say, the fire department. While it would be missed, if the library literally evaporated, we should be fine without it. Of course, that assumes whatever evaporated it didn’t do so to the rest of the Town in the process. So maybe that means we all need to be prepared for disasters, not so much the library?
FOIL came up. In particular, the library is looking into putting together a policy for replying to any requests that come in. Or deferring them to the Town, as fits. It was interesting to hear them talk, as my understanding is ALL information held by ALL governmental agencies (which would include the library) is available to the public. With certain exceptions (87.2). But if it can’t fit under the list of exceptions, it’s illegal to withhold. Of course, my understanding may well be wrong. And even if it isn’t, the exceptions are wide enough to cover quiet a bit.
There was discussion about the upcoming Thompson Urgent Care Center at 20 North Main. It will be interesting to see how that plays out. But at least we don’t have to speculate and wonder about who the new owner and planned use are. Now we can speculate and wonder about various details instead. Always something to gossip about, if you are so inclined.
And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the April 06, 2026 meeting of the Mendon Public Library Board of Trustees.
