Mendon Town Board 2025-11-10

The evening of 2025-11-10 was a meeting of the Mendon Town Board.

There was a surprisingly large crowd in the room. Something I like to see at this sort of thing. I recognized a number of those in the audience as recently having been elected. Good to see them showing up, in preparation for sitting at the table. Mind you, that still didn’t cover all the crowd. But in the end, I don’t need to know why people were there. Just glad more people are showing interest. Or maybe they just wanted to get in out of the cold.

During the Public Comment section, a resident complained about signs and/or a business not paying sales tax. Or something like that, as it felt like too much necessary context was missing to accurately understand the issue. What I did understand gave me the impression this falls outside the Town’s jurisdiction. Either way, I think it’s good when elected officials listen to their constituents. Even (especially?) when they can’t do anything about the topic at hand.

The Mendon Youth Center opens soon. I heard November 12th (ie Wednesday). Something to be aware of for those of you with (or are) middle school age kids.

Winter is starting to show up with snow in the air, and Summer Recreation was approved. Sometimes the planning needed to keep things going can be ironic in the timing.

The plan to turn Stoney Lonesome into a dead end continues along. I vaguely recall an aim to have that done by 11/1. But it sounds like the bureaucracy required more steps. Presumably the Board will approve this action after next month’s public hearing. Which might mean actual closing off of the road in January? As always, time will tell.

Interesting backstory with the Gottermier zoning change request. Sounds like he’s been trying to get this done for ~20 years. Although the summary felt too short for a 20 year quest. Either way, if I was to be optimistic, I could see the requested zoning change making it onto the Agenda in January or February. But as the majority of the Board will be different then, I can’t predict how they will react on this topic. Which has me wondering, how many times has Gottermier seen the Board membership change while he’s been chasing this goal?

On the topic of Board changing, swearing in ceremony was set for 1/1 2PM at the Community Center (ie legion hall). Perhaps related, the Town office will be closed that day.

And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the November 10, 2025 meeting of the Mendon Town Board.
