Mendon Town Board 2025-05-12

The evening of 2025-05-12 was a meeting of the Mendon Town Board.

Interestingly enough, the acting Highway Superintendent was asked to share during the Communications Agenda item. I think this is fitting, as most of the Town’s other elected official share here (only exception appears to be the Justices, but they are special for various reasons). Unfortunate timing, as this would seem to imply excluding the previous Highway Superintendent was personal, not positional. Regardless, better to get it right in the end.

Pending changes to the sign code were discussed. Nothing approved tonight, but likely to be so after a Public Hearing. Which appears to be planned for the July meeting.

There was an ‘oops’ regarding purchasing plows and salters. The details sounded somewhat contradictory to me, so I don’t really know what happened. Nonetheless, the Board was unable to find evidence they approved this expense when the purchase was made. Which would be a violation of their procurement policy. Although, as multiple Board members said, NOT approving the purchase now would likely have negative safety consequences come winter. So the expense was approved as is.

On the plus side, it sounds like the expense was budgeted. At least this won’t have negative financial impact as well. And it sounds like practices will be corrected for next time, to avoid a repeat. How’s the quote go… ‘Mistakes are mandatory, learning from them is optional’. Good to see the Town intends to learn from this one.

As an aside, I find it amusing how Minutes sometimes spell my name right, and sometimes don’t. Due to the recent special meetings, there were multiple minutes approved tonight. Which meant, this time I got to see my name spelling both right and wrong. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter. But it is the little things in life that can be the most entertaining.

And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the May 12, 2025 meeting of the Mendon Town Board.
