Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education 2024-06-25

The evening of 2024-06-25 was a meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education (BoE).

Gene (Superintendent) ‘yielded his time’ to other presentations. Not the first time he’s taken this action, but first I can recall he’s said those words. Reminded me of congressional hearings I’ve watched, sounding all official and such.

First presentation was the Financial Literacy Committee Findings. Long story short, they think we should teach students how to manage money. No surprise there. They outlined a general rollout that starts next year, even as it doesn’t become a requirement until 2028. I didn’t hear the Board formally agree with this plan, but fully expect them to before too long.

Second presentation was on Capitol Project Phase 3.B (mostly, other phases were also touched upon). 3.B is primarily for work in the High School, totaling ~$18 million. Sounds like work starts in September of this year and is expected to end in October 2026. Coincidentally, 3.C is also expected to end at the same time. We’ll find out in a few years how that goes.

HFLEA (union) contract was approved. As no one said anything to the contrary, I assume it fit within the recently approved budget. I did find it interesting how it referenced “Agreed upon county-wide salaries”, implying at least part of this was planned out at a larger scale. A number of increases in costs, but I lack enough of a frame of reference to really evaluate it. Was this a large increase? Or a small one?. In light of inflation, it felt small, but there is that quote about how to crush people by ‘grind them between the millstones of taxation and inflation‘.

Next years lunch prices went up, looks like a nickel. For those of you who purchase school lunches.

Besides that, it was a pretty straightforward meeting. But that’s what you get as the year winds down.

And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the June 25, 2024 meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education.

Agenda’s and similar information can be found at HFL’s BoardDocs page. While a recording will likely be available soon.
