The evening of 2023-11-28 was a meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education (BoE).
As it tends to be when the annual event happens, the highlight of the evening was the report from the Cougar Tech Robotics team. Students sharing is good, robots in action is also good. Combine them and I’m not surprised it’s a crowd pleaser.
Their presentation started off with an Alumni. She summarized her experiences with the program as a student. And now she is back as a mentor for the current team. Speaks highly of the program that she has returned.
And the presentation was wrapped up by Gary Stottler, former Board member. It’s good to see he’s still involved, even if no longer on the Board. We all help out where we can.
The robot now uses ‘swerve drive‘ to move it around. This allows the vehicle to move in one direction (for example, a straight line), while the chassis is spinning in another (in circles, for example). The driver attempted to demonstrate, but wasn’t quiet straight. In all fairness, it’s got to be hard to both drive straight and spin. It’s the sort of thing I would expect to work well as a script in software, but not in the spur of the moment, as this was.
By contrast, the rest of the meeting felt rather ordinary. Even the report of a fire in the wood shop almost isn’t worth noting. Especially as it was said there was no threat to students and the clean up/repairs have been completed.
Amy West, another former Board member, was at the meeting to give an update on BOCES benefits and similar. While the details where interesting, the broad strokes wasn’t anything new. Which is to say, BOCES helps the District with a variety of shared services and similar.
And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the November 28, 2023 meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education.
Agenda’s and similar information can be found at HFL’s BoardDocs page. While a recording will likely be available soon.
