Mendon Library Trustees 2023-03-06

The evening of 2023-03-06 was a meeting of the Mendon Public Library Board of Trustee meeting.

There was talk about the library’s many events, and how there are too many to properly share with everyone. All things considered, that’s a good problem to have.

As one example, there will be an art show at the library on 4/22. Appears to start at 1PM, but that’s far enough off I would suggest checking again before planning your day around it.

There was talk about how other libraries have been having difficulties with people requesting certain books be removed, for various objectionable content. While that hasn’t happened here (yet?), the library has a policy that covers this topic. Relevant here is the form to ‘Request for Review of Library Materials’. That starts the review process, which sounds like it ends with this Board deciding to either keep or remove the content in question.

Apparently, the library pays for storage of Microfilm, which has long since been digitized. The idea of storing that on-site, or disposing of it, came up. Which makes for a good opportunity to point out the importance of good backups. If the data matters, you want at least three copies, on at least two different mediums, and at least one off-site. There are, of course, variants on that core rule. But it’s the foundation of a good backup strategy.

And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the March 06, 2023 meeting of the Mendon Public Library Board of Trustees.

Link to agenda on Library website until they update it, losing the past.
