The evening of 2022-09-27 was a meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education (BoE).
The meeting started off with technical difficulties. From what I hear, the recording will be fine, but those in the room didn’t have the benefit of three large screens to watch presentations on. After a short delay for troubleshooting, the Board rolled with it and proceeded into their meeting. But John (Technology) kept plugging away at it and got it working well enough. Which is the goal there. During a meeting is not the time for exhaustive diagnostic and troubleshooting. Good job all around.
Gene (Superintendent) made a point to promote the HFL App. Looks like a useful tool for those that use such things. Also pointed out the Newsletter is a flip-book. While that’s nice, I would prefer a PDF (or similar downloadable file format). As the technical difficulties illustrated, there is value in simplicity (even as the bells and whistles appeal…).
There was an update to the ongoing Capitol Project (2.5). Discussion was mostly around the auditorium, as that seems to be where most of the recent work has been. In any case, pictures are available for those who (like me) want to see them.
The fee structure for the Wellness Center was changed. As there was no discussion, I only have my interpretation of the documents to work with (and thus may well be wrong). It looks like there will no longer be a usage fee, but there will now be a one time ‘orientation’ fee.
Following up on the previous public hearing, there was discussion around tax exemptions. Distilling the discussion down to a single point (and thus loosing all nuance, so go watch the recording if you care), the Board says deciding how to divide taxes falls outside their focus. No one was against supporting the various groups, just that this isn’t the way to do it. Personally, while it doesn’t quiet fit, it feels like these tax exemption might be running afoul of the ‘equal protection’ clause of the 14th amendment. That isn’t the fault of the BoE, but those that gave this task to them.
There was a long discussion around the budget process. While the details are likely irrelevant to anyone that isn’t on the Board, it does sound like there will be some incremental improvements. While I don’t mind the way those meetings have gone, as the budget presentations are generally interesting enough, I certainly won’t complain if they happen to end earlier.
And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the September 27, 2022 meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education.
Agenda’s and similar information can be found at HFL’s BoardDocs page. While a recording will likely be available soon.
