The evening of 2022-06-06 was a Mendon Public Library Board of Trustee meeting.
Interesting assortment of topics, with nothing in particular stealing the show. I get to so few of this groups meetings, the topics feel new when I do. None of the incremental process when you see it every month as they work through things. We will be doing X, we are about to do X, we are doing X, now that X is done, etc…
Impact from the eventual Fire Department expansion was discussed. Primarily as that project will be obstructing the view of the road, at least to some extent. Natural side effect of being a flag lot, someone will inevitably build in front of you. While the exact dates are unknown, best to be planning ahead.
There was talk about using a foundation for funding opportunities. Wasn’t enough context for me to really understand the details, but exploring the various ways to provide services seems prudent. If nothing else, being able to say ‘this can’t work because of X’ has value. And if it can work? All the better.
The library has two (technically three, but that’s a different story) large display screens sitting inside. They generally show slides of different library related topics. Open hours, upcoming events, that sort of thing. As part of the policy discussion there was talk around removing the option for people to pay to use those screens for advertisements. While I can understand the desire for more money, as it apparently hasn’t come up in the past, probably best to make this change. And if something that is worthy, but technically isn’t library related, happens to sneak in from time to time? Can’t cover everything in policy. Keep It Simple, and let those in the trenches work with it. Which seems to be where they are going, so all good.
The ‘Summer Reading Program‘ is almost upon us. Sounds like one of the staff has put together a webpage for all the information related to this. Looking over the Library’s website, all I can find is a ‘beta‘ page. So mayhaps still in the testing phase, and details subject to change? Either way, if you want an early look at what this program may be offering, here’s a link.
And the water fountain may be gaining a bottle filler. Seems to be a trend there, and I can’t fault them for that. I did find it interesting as the comment was made that no one uses the drinking fountain. Yet I used it directly before the meeting (among other times). Confirmation bias? Or am I that much of an anomaly?
And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the June 06, 2022 meeting of the Mendon Public Library Board of Trustees.
