The evening of 2022-05-09 was a meeting of the Mendon Town Board.
Despite not being there, Jim Merzke might have been the highlight of the meeting. The former Town Clerk will be acting Deputy Supervisor and Deputy Clerk at various times in the next month or so. Summer is here, people are going on vacation. And they want to make sure nothing goes wrong while they are away. I approve, backup plans are prudent.
Marriage licenses are up. Sounds like those that were busy panicking are getting them now. While I consider a panic unwise, I fully approve of getting married. Good for them and better late then never.
There was an interesting discussion around the property tax equalization rate. Amusingly enough, I was having this very discussion at the Library before the meeting started. Long story short, because the housing market has gone crazy, the state is adjusting the equalization rate. Which in turn impacts property taxes and things that work off that. On the other hand, reassessing everything costs money and also impacts property tax. Perhaps another sign that we are just taxed enough already (if not too much).
County Legislator Richard Milne was at the meeting to talk with the Town Board. While he mentioned many topics, his core message seemed to be that he was here to help and the Town was welcome to reach out to him anytime. Village Mayor Rick Milne was also in attendance.
A special meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, May 31. 7PM at the Community Center, as usual. Reason is to review bids on the Splash Park, but I’m sure they will deal with anything else that comes up between now and then.
And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the May 09, 2022 meeting of the Mendon Town Board.

In the interests of full disclosure, I continue to provide technical support to this group, and thus wasn’t exactly in the audience. For whatever that is worth…
