Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education 2021-11-09

Last night (2021-11-09) was a meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education (BoE).

As I am yet again watching a recording after the fact, I’ll applaud the Board and district staff for their diligence. Nothing beats interacting face to face, but they are clearly making an effort towards producing a reasonable alternative.

Two mothers spoke up during public comment time, both against vaccine mandates (even as they focused on different details). I applaud these woman for taking steps to protect their children. They both spoke better then I could, and I suggest you take the seven minutes to hear them. Then, if you agree, find a way to tell them they aren’t alone. Such bravery should be applauded and supported.

Robert Brown (Student Representative) had a very interesting observation on missing classes. He said that last year it was clear what to do, the process was obvious to all. But this year, not so much. He acknowledged that some students take the initiative and track down their teachers, but others don’t. Great feedback, that will hopefully lead to productive changes. While also offering another data point that massive disruptions cause more trouble then they’re worth.

Gene (Superintendent) covered a number of challenges the district is facing. More covid cases then last year, finding enough substitutes (teachers, drivers, etc), and getting enough gas to keep the buses running. On the plus side, John Miller is the new Director of Technology. Cindy will be missed, but good to have that position filled.

That tomorrow is Veteran’s Day was highlighted. I don’t know what your schedule is like, but there will be a small ceremony at the Honeoye Falls stoplight at 11AM. Whether you are there or not, take a few minutes to remember those who risked their lives so that we can enjoy the freedoms we still have.

Time for the annual Community Education report. Sounds like the program is still profitable overall, but tighter then past years. They are considering bringing fees back for wellness center (weight room) usage. While I’m sure that won’t be a popular change, you do what needs to be done to continue on. Meanwhile, sounds like staffing challenges here as well.

And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the November 09, 2021 meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education.

Agenda’s and similar information can be found at HFL’s BoardDocs page. While a recording is already available.
