Tonight (2020-10-13) was a meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education (BoE).
Another year, another School Board Recognition Week. It is nice to recognize the effort they take, as it is a rather thankless job. Someone (and often somemany) will be upset with whatever action they take. Yet action must be done (even if that action is ‘do nothing’).
During his report, Gene (Superintendent) was glad the guidance he receives now recognizes that schools are not doctors. In other words, the district is no longer expected to make all judgment calls on illnesses. ‘Ask your Primary Care Physician‘ is now a valid answer. That it ever wasn’t seems rather odd, but apparently that was the case.
One of the staff (missed who in the Zoom) discussed the other impacts of this panic. In particular the emotional and financial negative side effects of what we are doing to ourselves. No one actually said ‘the cure is worse then the disease’, but that sure sounded like the implication. Mental issues and poverty were already problems, they won’t be getting any better while the economy is ‘off’ and anti-social behavior is mandatory.
Snow days are now a thing of the past. Their function is now part of ‘Asynchronous Learning Days‘. Which is to say, on what would have been a snow day the students will be expected to ‘learn from home’. It will be interesting to see how that plays out, and I am looking forward to whatever analysis comes from all this distant learning.
Fund raising is apparently an issue for some of the clubs and similar activities. More fallout of the panic, but also an opportunity. For example, the robotics team has setup an account at the Nickel and Dime Redemption Center on the corner of Ontario and East. You can drop off cans/bottles/etc and instead of giving the deposit to you, it goes to the robotics team.
And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the October 13, 2020 meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education.
As has become the norm for this group, Agenda’s and similar information can be found at HFL’s BoardDocs page. While a recording of the meeting will likely be available soon.
