As usual this time of year, there is an upcoming election. The actual vote will be held Tuesday November 5th, 2019. For those who also live in Honeoye Falls, the polling station is the Mendon Community Center, formerly known as the Legion Hall.
As this is an ‘off’ year, and the focus is already on next years presidential election, I would expect the turn out to be on the low side. If anything, that means your vote has a larger impact (as there are fewer cast).
At the state level we have Meredith Vacca, Kevin Nasca, and Matthew Rosenbaum running for the 7th Judicial District of the State Supreme Court. One of three ‘pick two’ in this election.
At the County level we have Adam J Bello and Cheryl Dinolfo running for County Executive. Another ‘pick two’ is County Court Judge, with Karen Bailey Turner, Kyle R Steinebach, Michael L Dollinger, and John L DeMarco running for the positions. Shani C Mitchell and Sandra J Doorley are running for District Attorney. For the 5th County Legislator District we have Terry Daniele and Karla F Boyce running.
At the town level we have the third ‘pick two’ with David L Cook, Thomas G Dubois, Jeffrey R Clark, and Karen R Jenkins running for Town Council. Jon M Stern and William P Fletcher are running for Town Justice. The remainder of the town positions are running unopposed, with John D Moffitt for Town Supervisor, James P Merzke for Town Clerk, and William E Smith for Superintendent of Highways.
It looks like the 5th Legislator will be the race to watch, at least judging by fliers in the mail. I received four times as many for that race then all the others combined.
Considering the year, and the likely lower turnout, this does open up interesting possibilities for those running unopposed. I do find the idea of a ‘write-in’ getting elected amusing. Although as Bud has retired, that does raise interesting questions for what the election means for that position.
And to top it off, election day isn’t a ‘day’ anymore. Due to ‘early voting‘, election day has already started. And won’t end for over a week. While I can understand some benefits to this practice, I can also see some negatives. The biggest is increased complexity, which could (potentially) lead to increased fraud. After all, now that we can vote early, how long until we can vote often?
And those are some opinions on this upcoming election. Agree or disagree, you’ve got a week to figure out which candidate to pick.
