Tonight (2019-04-23) was a meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education (BoE).
Tonight’s meeting included a workshop on using BoardDocs. I have to assume the trainer was on a schedule, as normal activities were skipped. Before approving an agenda, or even formally calling the meeting to order, they were off to the training. Which was fine, if amusing from a procedure standpoint.
The training itself was ok. I’ve seen better, and worse. If the training was for me, I would have wanted more keyboard shortcuts, but I don’t think most people use those. And in the end, that’s what training is about: giving the student what they need to work on their own.
There was apparently a gas leak at Lima Primary recently. I hadn’t heard of it, but as they say, no news is good news. All the comments said tonight were about how well the situation was handled by everyone involved. While things were delayed, no one was hurt. And at the end of the day, isn’t that all that matters here?
Likewise, there was apparently a staff training day not that long ago. Unlike the above, not the sort of thing I would expect the public at large to know (or care) about. While a number of training topics were mentioned, I found the LGBTetc one of note. That issue hasn’t gone away, we are still allowing children to make adult decisions. I would like to say this surprises me, but it doesn’t.
The discussion of the Board Procedure Manual continued from last meeting. Unlike last meeting, it was a short discussion. They decided the remaining parts of the ‘Board Meetings‘ section belonged in the ‘Governance’ section, so would be moved there and discussed at that time. Makes sense, but I found the delaying of discussion a shame. They had the time, it was on their minds, get it done.
The recently passed state budget contained some surprises. It sounds like elected officials can’t use personal email accounts, and all employees need to be paid for the time they take to vote in elections. The first, I thought was already law. The second, while a nice idea sounds chaotic in implementation. Expect updates at some point, because it sounds like no one knows what the law means, even after passing it.
While there were other topics discussed, most of them felt rather ordinary, and not worth pointing out here.
And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the April 23, 2019 meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education.
As has become the norm for this group, Agenda’s and similar information can be found at HFL’s BoardDocs page.
