Tonight (2018-05-21) was a meeting of the Honeoye Falls Board of Trustees.
This was the first Trustee meeting since Charlie (Code Enforcement Officer, among other titles) has left us. His absence was felt. While there is always a degree of uncertainty on this side of the veil, I hope he is in a better place now. As for those of us still here, always plenty to do.
Michele Waterstraat wants to build ‘Fairy Houses‘ in the Village parks. While details will need to be worked out (as always), the Trustees liked the idea. I’m admittedly of mixed minds here. If the idea is used as a tool to get people outside and building stuff, then it’s all good. If it’s taken too seriously, well then it stops being good. See ‘Preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse‘…
There are rumors that the Regional Transit Service (RTS) is going to discontinue service to the village (among other places). Which led to discussion tonight about how to discourage them from taking such action. While I don’t think I have ever ridden the bus, there are times when knowing it will be there has helped for planning. I’ve gone places where I wasn’t sure I had a ride coming back, where RTS served as a backup plan. Still, if it’s not worth their time/effort to maintain the routes, then I guess they can close them. I mean, it’s not like it’s a tax payer subsidized organization or anything…
As the Town Board did last week, the Village Trustees approved their portion of the Summer Recreation program. It is amusing watching the different boards handle the same issue from their various viewpoints. Perhaps tomorrow the School Board will approve their part of this activity.
Apparently the state has passed a law requiring any Fire Department to cover their members should they develop cancer in the line of duty. A noble enough idea, but I would not be surprised if this led to a decrease in ‘volunteer’ fire departments. As this brings increased costs for each person helping out, at some point it becomes more cost effective to move to full time staff, instead of volunteers. Too soon to say, but I suspect this will become another example of the “most terrifying words in the English language“.
Following that discussion was one about a planned ‘Love Leads Us’ event in August (exact date uncertain, but I expect Saturday the 11th). Some in the community have expressed the idea that we are not adequately inclusive, and want to celebrate our diversity as a way of improving this situation. A nice enough idea on the surface, but as it sounds like it is being motivated by an attempt to shame ‘white supremacists’ into renouncing their ‘evil ways’, it comes across a bit hypocritical to me. Then again, if I really wanted people to see each other as being human, over any insignificant differences, then I would focus on those commonalities. As usual, time will tell, but I’m not feeling very optimist on this one.
And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the May 21, 2018 meeting of the Honeoye Falls Board of Trustees.
Digital version of Agenda was not available anywhere I could find. Perhaps it will be on the Village’s website in the future, perhaps not…
