Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education 2017-07-11

Tonight (2017-07-11) was a meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education (BoE).

Most BoE meetings people wander in and go looking for their name tags. Tonight, no name tags. Which caused some short lived confusion. Amusing to watch, almost made up for the boring bit

For the past few months (4 or so?) the BoE has been revising how they go about appointing their groups ‘leader’. Tonight we got to see the results of that process. Overall I think it worked well. The Vice President process could probably stand another round of polish, but other then that it was good.

I was half right in predicting board positions. Amy did become President (even as she tried to stick Gary with the job), but Carol became Vice President. Stephanie gave it a try, which led to a split vote (5-4). If they didn’t have the history working well together, a one vote difference for a position could be worrisome. But they do have the history, so I’m sure it will work out in the end.

Which brought us to the long boring part of this type of meeting. Appointments and similar bureaucratic repetition. The major of it appears to be exactly the same as last year (Jim is still Receiver of Taxes, etc). A decent number are mostly the same, with minor changes (Budget Transfer limit went up a smidge, etc). And a handful are significantly different (… none?). So, of course, they go through them all. To their credit, there was some grouping, but not enough. When the time came I did make some suggestions for streamlining. We’ll see what happens next year.

They did opt to disband the District Communication Advisory Committee, for the second year in a row. Clearly someone did not get the message the first time.

One nice thing about the steady approval of things that were also approved last year, is it provides a nice time to thing and ponder. For example, I realized that there is only one BoE member that was here when I started Observing these meetings. The other eight are relatively new. Mind you, at this point ‘new’ is something like eight years.

At least Gene (Superintendent) was back from his absence.

And those are my Observations From Audience Land for the July 11th, 2017 meeting of the Honeoye Falls-Lima Board of Education.

As is becoming the norm for this group, Agenda’s and similar information can be found at HFL’s BoardDocs page.
